With an investment of more than USD 630 million, the Cheves Hydropower Plant was officially inaugurated. The plant is operated by Statkraft Peru, a subsidiary of the Statkraft Group, a Norwegian leading company in hydropower internationally and Europe’s largest generator of renewable energy.
The President of the Republic, Ollanta Humala Tasso, the Ministry of Energy and Mines, Rosa María Ortiz, and representatives from the communities within the area of influence, regional government and local governments attended the opening of this major hydropower plant -the largest plant opened this year. The CEO and Board members of the Statkraft Group, as well as the company’s shareholders, were also in attendance.
The President highlighted that the Cheves Hydropower Plant will increase the hydropower potential of the country. “This type of projects contributes to consolidate the country’s growth,” he said.
The Ministry of Energy and Mines stated that “worth noting is the good work performed by the company in coordination with local and regional authorities, and communities.”
With this new plant, Statkraft renews its contribution to the Peruvian energy market by providing more renewable energy to the national grid and to the industrial sector. On the other hand, Statkraft also contributes with leading practices on environmental and ethical issues, following the high standards passed on by the head office in Norway.
“Cheves represents an important step regarding the contribution of energy to the country, and is a clear example of how the private sector can work hand in hand with the communities to bring about further growth, as made evident by the over 50 local development projects completed during the construction stage,” said Juan Antonio Rozas, Country Manager of Statkraft Peru.
In Peru, Statkraft operates 9 hydropower plants in the Cajamarca, Ancash, Junín, Arequipa and Lima regions, all of which add up to an effective capacity of 443 MW. Cheves contributes with 171 MW.
“Statkraft’s growth is part of its global business strategy, which obviously includes Peru. We have celebrated 120 years and our goal is to keep sharing know-how and expertise with our operations globally,” concluded Laine Powell, Senior Vice President for South America.
